Maintenance service intervals
BS 5839-1:2025 provides guidance on fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises, including inspection and maintenance.
Servicing should be carried out by a competent person, normally at six-monthly intervals, with a permitted one-month tolerance either side. A shorter interval may be appropriate for the system, environment or identified risks.

Design considerations for Buildings
The design and type of fire alarm system suitable for a building all depends on the structure and use of the building and current legislation. New and altered buildings require approval from the local building control and existing buildings, except domestic premises, are to comply with The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the required fire risk assessment.
